Golenbock Provides Pro Bono Legal Counsel to Plaintiffs in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York

We appreciate having been recognized by Chief Judge for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), Laura Taylor Swain, for being one of 22 law firms that provided pro bono services to pro se litigants. She credited the attorneys with helping to reduce the backlog of cases the Court faced in 2022.

Special thanks to Kelsey Davis who, together with Martin Hyman, represented a plaintiff, pro bono, in a sexual harassment and retaliation case in the Eastern District against a financial institution in which the plaintiff alleged she was sexually harassed by the CEO and retaliated against by the CEO and other executives. Her original counsel withdrew from the case during the course of discovery and prior to mediation. Golenbock stepped in to conduct the mediation and, after a lengthy session, were able to achieve a reasonable settlement with which the client was pleased. Special thanks also goes to Scott Yakaitis, who recently undertook a trademark case on a pro bono basis.

The pro bono cases made available to those admitted to practice in SDNY and EDNY are just a fraction of the cases filed by individuals without the assistance of counsel. The cases for which the judges request pro bono counsel are carefully considered: at least one claim has been deemed potentially meritorious and yet the litigant, usually a plaintiff with important constitutional and civil rights at stake, does not have the means to hire an attorney.

Serving indigent clients in a pro bono capacity is an important public service to which the lawyers at Golenbock have remained committed since our founding 41 years ago.
